About Entre Mundos

Entre Mundos: Interdisciplinary Latin American Student Journal is the latest initiative of the Latin American Network at McMaster University (LANMU). LANMU, established in 2021, brings together students, staff, and faculty with ties to Latin America and its diasporas. Its mission is to celebrate, recognize, and empower the Latin American community at McMaster, and to act as a hub for disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and multidisciplinary research and teaching related to Latin America and its diasporas. This Latin American Interdisciplinary Student Journal builds on LANMU’s mandate, providing a space for graduate and undergraduate students across Canada to publish original scholarship, creative work, and commentary on topics connected to Latin America, the Caribbean, and their diasporas.

Danielle Berges

My name is Danielle Dominique Berges, and I am a Dominican graduate student currently pursuing my Master’s in Global Politics. My academic work is centered on Latin America, especially as the region navigates this evolving era of digital politics and shifting forms of power. My passion has always been to expand the understanding of Latin American culture, politics, and identity beyond the traditional boundaries that often shape how the region is studied. Latin America is a space of extraordinary diversity, and I deeply believe in platforms that uplift its multiple voices, experiences, and innovations. There is still a noticeable gap between academia, cultural expression, and the everyday lived realities of Latin American communities. I am committed to helping bridge that gap. Publications like Entre Mundos create an essential environment where research, storytelling, and new ideas can coexist and flourish together. Whether rooted in scientific inquiry, communication, or the social sciences, Latin American knowledge deserves a unified space to be recognized, shared, and celebrated.

Sophia Cohen Galvao

Sophia Cohen Galvao is a PhD student at McMaster University’s Department of History. Originally from Recife, Brazil, Sophia moved to Canada in early 2020 to pursue a degree at the University of New Brunswick. Now at McMaster, she has developed an interest in gender, disability, and social welfare in nineteenth-century England. Her dissertation will delve into the intersection of disability and masculinity in the mid-Victorian workhouse. Sophia is a founding member of Entre Mundos and an honorary Editorial Board Member. As a student, Sophia has had an ample publication record, with academic papers on The Mirror, Living Histories, and TimePieces. For two years, she also worked as a Reporter for the University of New Brunswick’s student newspaper The Brunswickan. Between reading one book and the next, she enjoys watching TV with her cat, the fearless Gordon.

Bruno Dos Santos

I am a PhD student in Transportation Geography at McMaster University, ON, Canada. In general, my research is related to the use of spatial models to measure urban inequalities, with directions and propositions for public management. My educational background is in urban and environmental engineering, with the main goal of mobilizing knowledge in data analysis to investigate social inequalities.

Our History

From right to left: Valeria Flores Zambrano, Maria Sophia Cohen, Dr. Rodrigo Narro Perez, Dr. Stacy Creech, and Keila Elyasi Gonzalez celebrating the official launch of Entre Mundos at the first event for Latin American Heritage Month on Oct 1st, 2025.

The inaugural organizing committee, made up of PhD Candidate Valeria Flores Zambrano and PhD Student Sophia Cohen Galvao, as well as undergraduate student Keila Elyasi Gonzalez, developed the journal in collaboration with LANMU under the supervision of Dr. Rodrigo Narro Perez (Assistant Professor, School of Earth, Environment and Society (SEES), Faculty of Science) and Dr. Stacy Creech (Postdoctoral Fellow, Faculty of Humanities). By fostering cross-campus collaboration and emphasizing interdisciplinary perspectives, Entre Mundos invites students nationwide to contribute to an evolving scholarly conversation and to help build a community of emerging Latin American and Latinx scholars.

This project was partially funded by the Student Partners Program of the Paul R. MacPherson Institute for Leadership, Innovation and Excellence in Teaching, Summer 2025.

Structure

The journal operates through a collaborative and structured hierarchy designed to ensure both academic rigor and creative innovation. At the top, Faculty Advisors provide guidance and mentorship to the editorial team. The Editor-in-Chief oversees the publication process, working closely with a Communications & Graphics Coordinator to manage outreach and visual design. Editorial Board Members support the Editor-in-Chief in reviewing submissions and coordinating the work of Peer Reviewers, who evaluate articles for quality and clarity. Together, this structure balances mentorship, leadership, and collaboration, offering students hands-on experience in publishing while upholding high editorial standards.

Focus & Scope

Entre Mundos is a student-led, peer-reviewed journal that publishes diverse perspectives and research on Latin America and Latin American communities worldwide. We publish interdisciplinary work by Canadian undergraduate and graduate students exploring the region’s histories, cultures, politics, environments, and scientific contributions. Submissions may include research articles, reviews, commentaries, creative writing, and visual artwork. Our goal is to amplify underrepresented voices, spark critical thinking, and inspire collaboration across disciplines. Current publication schedule is one volume per year.

Review Guidelines

This journal operates on a double-blind review basis. This means that the reviewers do not know the identity of the author, and the author does not know the identity of the reviewers. The communication between journal and author is mediated by the Editorial Board Member in charge of the reviewing team and the Editor-in-Chief.
